Re: Australian Open 2009

Well, another great final between Federer and Nadal with the spaniard taking it 7-5, 3-6, 7-6, 3-6, 6-2.  For 4sets there certainly some spellbounding tennis but once again Nadal capitalised on opportunities generally much better and proved stronger in the end despite an injury scare with his thigh in the 3rd set.  Federer though played a disappointing 5th and his serve let him down at crucial times in the match.  So though not quite same standard as Wimbledin final it was most enjoyable and Nadal a worthy winner.  Federer was disappointed at his display in the end and was a bit emotional at the ceremony.

Unfortunately things didn't go to plan for Andy Murray and after seemingly being in impressive form, having won in Doha where he beat Federer again and Roddick in the final after 3 straightforward wins (including impressive Meltzer win) he went down in 5 sets to the last 16 to Fernando Verdasco.  The spaniard was in tremendous form in the crucial stages of the match but I felyt Andy wasn't aggressive enough at times and the fact that he had picked up a virus didn't help.  Anyway Verdasco showed that result was no fluke and went on to give Nadal an almighty test in the semis  (best match of the tournament) and only succumbed 6-4 in the 5th.  He now goes on to face Roger Federer in the final and Fed has turned it on after loomking shaky in a 5 set win over Thomas Berdych.  He has been looking imperious after that and swept aside Del Porto for the loss of 3 games and  beat Roddick who had been playing well in straights in his semi.

Really enjoyed watching the tournament and Andy was just fantastic in his wins over Federer and Nadal. Beating Federer again was brilliant but the win over Nadal was both superb and amazing due to the quality of the tennis and you tell it meant so much to both them, even if was an exhibition. the 7th game of the final set really was breathtaking. Doha could well be great too!

Abu Dhabi Exhibition

Thought I'd post here again. It was great to see Andy in action again and in such tremendous form in the 6-2, 6-2 against Blake (who admittedly didn't really produce) but Murray was so strong. Hopefully Andy will have another inspiring performance against Federer and if the match is near the quality of the Shanghai encounter we shall be in for a treat.

In the other match Davydenko had a fairly comfortable 6-4, 6-4 success against Roddick and the american was probably a bit predictable.

Well, Andy didn't make Valencia due to virus but was playing in Monte Carlo and had two fine wins but then came up short against Djokovic where he really didn't show his best form. Let's hope for a good showing in Barcelona, though tough draw as could be playing Ancic and then Almagro.

Well, Serena Williams took the title in a topsy turvey encounter with Jelena Jankovic which was high in drama as Williams leads ecvaporated in 2nd and 3rd sets. However a 5-0 deficit was too much for Jelena to overcome, even thoygh she did win three game on the trot.

Well, the upsets continued as Davydenko outplayed first Roddick (who he'd never beaten despite higher ranking)m and then Nadal pretty comprehensively in the end in the final. What a tournament!

Would you belivve it, A Rod goes on to neat Fed for first time in 5 years in entertaining match! Who could have predicted Federer would be withouta title at this stage!

Serena beat Svetlana impressively in the end (who put out Venus) in a tight 3 setter, though Kutsy probably missed her chance. She will face either Jelena or Vera Zvonareva.

It was an absolutely fantastic match between Nadal and Blake but Nadal proved the stronger and pulled away in the 3rd. Roddick holding his own so far against Federer in 1st set.

Looking forward to the clash between Nadal and Blake who both won fairly convincingly today.

The Serena/ Justine match was a rout for the american and Justine couldn't get anything going collecting only 2 games, so a disappointing spectacle. She could polay her sister Venus if she can overcome Kuznetsova.

It can be a weakness and is still work in progress. At times it can be very effective (was great when he neat Federer), but it's not consistently at a high level.

Well, unfortunately seemed well beaten by Davenport 6-4, 6-2 who of course can be still be tough. Could have been a bit jaded possibly.

Re: Andy Murray

Andy has had some fine success this season with 2 titles and a win over Rodger Federer coupled with some early exits and lost a tight battle with Mario Ancic in his forst match in Dubai. Some disappointments but his game will take a little while to fully progress and he can come back stronger. On Sky they were discussing his serve and saying that Federer's comments were misnterpreted by the media as he has sound advice.

I am hoping that Ana Ivanovic can follow up her Indian Win with a good run here. of course Henin, Jankovic, Kutnetsova and Serena Williams some of the other strong contenders. It is also good to see Lindsay Davenport back here.

There have certainly been a lot of shocks at this events, though of course back to back masters events can be difficult for players who have performed well i the previous one though was surprised that Djokovic lost to a qualifer. Disappointed to see Andy Murray lose a tight match to tough draw Ancic.
